Christine Marie Davis - Artist Statement

I delight in creating attractive and intriguing objects that are also strange, puzzling and ultimately unsettling. My mixed media sculptural assemblages are an amalgamation of biological forms and man-made tools or machines. These tactile, erotic, surrealist sculptures entice the viewer through sensuous shapes and seductive surfaces. They often evoke an irresistible desire to touch or hold on the part of the viewer.

When I begin a piece, I hunt for found objects that speak to me and are intriguing or unusual. These are often antiques, relics, old tools, or cases for which the use or purpose has long been forgotten. I take one object as a starting place to begin a single sculpture or I assemble a collection of related objects into a cabinet of curiosities. I add soft materials such as hair, fur, leather, wax and rubber, referencing skin, the body and bodily processes and contrast these with the harder materials and man-made tools.

When someone encounters my work, I want him or her to stop and let the mind settle on the paradox or conundrum that may exist within or amongst the works. They may be expecting one thing upon first glance, and get something totally different with further exploration. They may do a "double take" and not be completely sure of my meaning, purpose or message. With some time, they may find multiple layers of meaning and function emerge. If a piece helps the viewer to let go of fixed opinions and familiar expectations, then I have been successful.
